Job summary

Temporal is a fully-remote company building an open-source programming model to simplify code, improve reliability, and accelerate feature delivery. We seek a Staff Software Engineer - Agent Optimization to lead agent optimization efforts and design systems for token spend, response time, and quality across multiple languages and architectures.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional work experience.
• Experience optimizing AI systems using ML and systems techniques.
• Experience with generative AI, particularly for agents and coding.
• Focus on quality and not just quantity in software.
• Opinionated yet thoughtful approach to coding practices.
• Fluency in multiple programming languages.
• Deep experience with concurrent programming (mutexes, atomics).
• Experience designing APIs and writing documentation for public libraries.
• Strong technical communication in English.
• Graduate degree or equivalent experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Work as a software engineer.
• Maintain and expand understanding of agentic coding.
• Design and build agentic coding systems delivering high-quality outputs.
• Develop understanding of AI app development patterns and techniques.
• Take end-to-end ownership of new features with reliability and developer experience in mind.
• Collaborate across teams on Temporal features and APIs.
• Engage with developer community to debug issues and gather feedback.
• Write public technical docs describing Temporal concepts and APIs.
• Support customers when engineering expertise is needed.
• Attend conferences or travel to meet coworkers occasionally.
