Job summary

Rivian's Palo Alto team is seeking a Staff AI Software Engineer specializing in agentic applications to shape how AI is integrated into product engineering workflows. You will lead architecture, implement core components, and collaborate with product, systems, and data teams to drive scalable, observable AI tools across the lifecycle of Rivian vehicles.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Shipped and operated LLM-based or agentic applications in production.
• Deep understanding of agent system design: orchestration, tool calling, grounding, memory management.
• Expertise in backend and distributed systems: APIs, asynchronous execution, state management.
• Expert-level Python and experience deploying services on cloud infrastructure with containers.
• Record of setting technical direction and engineering practices.
• Experience integrating with enterprise systems under security constraints.
• Ability to turn ambiguous user needs into practical technical solutions.
• Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. in CS/Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the agent platform architecture and multi-step agents.
• Establish reusable patterns and standards for organization-wide adoption.
• Set reliability, observability, and evaluation quality targets for AI systems.
• Lead design and implementation of the most complex components.
• Evaluate models, frameworks, and tools; drive roadmap with impact.
• Partner with Security and Legal to embed data governance.
• Mentor engineers and participate in hiring.
