Job summary

Gusto seeks an experienced software engineer to lead end-to-end, LLM-powered agent systems within our Otto platform. You will design and build the runtime, tool layer, backend, and frontend components for production-grade, safe AI actions.

You will collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and CX teams to translate user needs into shipped capabilities, while mentoring engineers and elevating safety standards across live customer accounts.

Qualifications

• Typically 8+ years of software engineering experience, owning systems end-to-end.
• Built and shipped LLM-powered or agentic systems in production.
• Experience across backend services, an LLM runtime, and customer-facing product.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects with measurable impact at scale.
• Judgment about safety when software takes actions on live accounts.
• Ability to mentor engineers and raise the bar.

Responsibilities

• Design and build across the Otto platform end-to-end, including runtime and agent graph.
• Expand agent capabilities with safe, tool-using actions and human-in-the-loop approvals.
• Create eval and observability systems to deploy changes weekly with safety.
• Work with LLMs: prompting, tool design, retrieval, and feedback loops.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and CX to ship capabilities.
• Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards.
