Job summary

Gusto is seeking a senior software engineer to own end‑to‑end design and delivery of our Otto AI agent platform. You will work across the Rails/GraphQL backend, the LLM runtime, and the agent-facing frontend to ship capable, safe capabilities for small business customers.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with Product/Data/Design, and help scale the system responsibly in a high-autonomy, test-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Experience shipping LLM-powered or agentic systems in production.
• Ability to own multi-quarter projects with measurable impact.
• Strong judgment about safety when systems act on real accounts.

Responsibilities

• Design and build across the Otto platform end-to-end.
• Expand autonomous agent capabilities including tool use with human-in-the-loop.
• Develop eval and observability systems to monitor production agents.
