Job summary

Gusto seeks a seasoned full-stack software engineer on the Growth team to own AI-powered onboarding, activation, and lifecycle experiences. You’ll shape technical direction, ship production features, and measure impact across onboarding and email experiences.

You’ll collaborate with product, data, design, marketing, and platform teams, mentor engineers, and establish safe, scalable AI patterns. Travel for onboarding or office events is required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software development for customer-facing products at scale.
• Experience in Growth onboarding, communications, and lifecycle flows.
• Strong applied AI fluency with prompt design and content generation.
• Proven track record owning multi-quarter initiatives with measurable impact.
• Ability to balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability.
• Excellent collaboration with product, data, design, and marketing.
• Experience mentoring engineers and scaling team impact.
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and operate AI-powered Growth experiences across onboarding and lifecycle.
• Own AI Voice Agent development including workflows and safety.
• Build scale AI-driven email systems across the funnel with generation workflows.
• Partner with Product, Data, Design, Marketing, and Platform to improve funnel metrics.
• Design APIs, backend services, and frontend experiences for personalized onboarding.
• Establish engineering patterns for applied AI, prompts, evaluation, observability.
• Help make long-term architectural decisions for conversational systems.
• Mentor engineers to raise technical execution.
