Job description

Staff Accountant – NetSuite & Inventory Accounting

Location: Northern New Jersey

Industry: Packaging Distribution / Light Manufacturing

Position: Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Staff Accountant to join our finance team at a growing packaging distribution and light manufacturing company in Northern New Jersey.

The ideal candidate will have strong accounting fundamentals combined with hands-on NetSuite experience and a solid understanding of inventory accounting and warehouse transactions. This position will play an important role in the monthly close process, inventory reconciliation, general ledger accuracy, and resolving accounting and transactional discrepancies.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant who enjoys working beyond traditional journal entries and reconciliations and wants to understand how operational transactions flow through an ERP system and ultimately impact inventory, COGS, and the general ledger.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform bank reconciliations, research discrepancies, and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items.
  • Prepare and maintain general ledger account reconciliations as part of the monthly close process.
  • Prepare, review, and post inventory-related journal entries.
  • Reconcile inventory balances and investigate differences between inventory records, warehouse activity, and the general ledger.
  • Understand and analyze warehouse transactions, including:
  • Inventory receipts
  • Transfers between locations
  • Inventory adjustments
  • Item fulfillments and shipments
  • Inventory movements and related transactions
  • Review the impact of inventory transactions on inventory and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS).
  • Manage fixed asset accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, and account reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve accounting and transactional discrepancies within NetSuite.
  • Assist with month-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and variance analysis.
  • Work closely with Finance, Operations, Purchasing, Customer Service, and Warehouse personnel to ensure transactions are accurately recorded and reflected in the general ledger.
  • Identify accounting or process issues and recommend improvements to strengthen accuracy, controls, and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • 3–5+ years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably within a distribution, manufacturing, wholesale, or other inventory-intensive environment.
  • Strong NetSuite experience is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of inventory accounting and COGS.
  • Experience performing general ledger reconciliations and participating in the month-end close process.
  • Experience with fixed asset accounting.
  • Ability to research transactions independently and trace activity from the underlying operational transaction through the general ledger.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively across accounting and operational departments.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be a hands-on accountant who is comfortable working directly in NetSuite and digging into transactions to determine why something does not reconcile.

We are particularly interested in candidates who understand the connection between warehouse activity, inventory, COGS, and the general ledger—not simply someone who has processed journal entries.

Experience in a distribution, packaging, manufacturing, warehouse, or inventory-intensive business is highly desirable.

Compensation

Compensation will reflect the candidate's level of NetSuite expertise, inventory accounting experience, and ability to independently manage reconciliations and month-end responsibilities.
