Job description

Build the Numbers. Understand the Business. Make an Impact.

More than processing transactions. An opportunity to understand how the business performs.

At Cornerstone, accounting isn't just about recording what happened. It's about providing accurate, timely financial information that helps our teams understand where projects stand, make better decisions, and keep the company moving forward.

Since 1993, Cornerstone has grown as a 100% Alaskan-owned, managed, and staffed commercial contractor by building great projects, developing strong teams, and holding ourselves accountable for results.

We're looking for a Staff Accountant who wants to build a broader accounting career, someone interested in understanding the connection between the general ledger, project costs, financial reporting, and the construction operations behind the numbers.

If you're analytical, curious, detail-oriented, and enjoy figuring out why the numbers look the way they do, not simply entering them, we'd like to meet you.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Every construction project generates thousands of financial transactions, and each one contributes to a much larger picture of how a project and the company are performing.

The Staff Accountant helps make sure that picture is accurate. You'll work across general ledger accounting, project/job costing, transaction processing, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial analysis while partnering directly with Project Managers and the Accounting Team.

Your work will help identify discrepancies before they become problems, improve the accuracy of project financial information, support better business decisions, and protect the integrity of Cornerstone's financial records. This is an opportunity to do more than accounting transactions. It's an opportunity to understand the business behind the numbers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO (THE IMPACT YOU'LL HAVE)
Own the Accounting Details
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and supporting schedules.
  • Review transactions for accurate coding, classification, documentation, and accounting treatment.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies while maintaining accurate and organized financial records.
Understand How Projects Perform
  • Maintain and reconcile project budgets, costs, commitments, billings, cash receipts, and job cost activity.
  • Support owner billings, Job Status Reports, forecasts, and monthly project financial reviews.
  • Analyze project activity to identify significant variances, discrepancies, and potential financial concerns.
Connect Accounting & Operations
  • Partner with Project Managers and project teams to maintain accurate project financial information.
  • Resolve cost coding and project accounting issues and maintain alignment between project records, job costs, and the general ledger.
  • Provide timely financial information that supports project and business decision-making.
Support AP & Transaction Accuracy
  • Review and process vendor and subcontractor transactions for proper approval, coding, documentation, and accounting period.
  • Support payments, cash receipts, credit card transactions, and resolution of invoice or payment discrepancies.
  • Review project transactions for accurate allocation to projects, cost codes, and general ledger accounts.
Help Close the Books
  • Prepare reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and supporting information for monthly and year-end close.
  • Review general ledger and project activity for incomplete transactions, unusual balances, trends, and variances.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting.
Analyze More Than Transactions
  • Analyze project and company financial information to identify trends, variances, errors, and potential concerns.
  • Apply GAAP, company accounting policies, and internal controls while identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support audits, tax preparation, and compliance requirements through accurate schedules and documentation.
Strengthen the Accounting Team
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Project Management, and other departments to meet deadlines and support business operations.
  • Maintain financial documentation and support accounting systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Cross-train across the Accounting Team and contribute to continuous improvement.
IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate brings:

  • 2+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience involving general ledger accounting, reconciliations, transaction processing, or similar responsibilities.
  • An Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field—or relevant accounting experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
  • Experience working with accounting or ERP systems and Microsoft Excel to process, reconcile, analyze, and report financial information.
  • Strong accounting fundamentals with the ability to understand journal entries, account reconciliations, general ledger activity, and job costs.
  • An analytical mindset—you don't just identify that something doesn't balance; you want to understand why.
  • The ability to work effectively with both accounting professionals and operational teams while managing multiple priorities and recurring deadlines.
EXPERIENCE THAT WILL SET YOU APART

You don't need every one of these to be successful, but they'll make you especially competitive:

  • 3+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with construction accounting, project accounting, or job cost accounting.
  • Experience supporting month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and audit activities.
  • Experience with Sage, Sage Intacct, Procore, or similar accounting, ERP, and construction management systems.
  • Experience working directly with Project Managers or operational leaders to review project financial performance.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience analyzing financial data to identify trends, variances, and discrepancies.

Don't come from construction? Don't count yourself out.

Strong accounting fundamentals, analytical ability, curiosity, and a willingness to learn the construction business can be just as important as having worked for a contractor before. If you've built a strong accounting foundation and are ready to expand beyond transaction processing, we encourage you to apply.

COMPENSATION
  • $65,000–$105,000 DOE
  • Performance bonus opportunity of up to 15% of base salary
  • Growth opportunities based on capability, contribution, and performance

We're building a team of people who take ownership, support each other, and take pride in doing things right. Performance matters, and it's recognized and rewarded. You're trusted to manage your responsibilities, solve problems, ask questions, and help improve the way we work.

WHY CORNERSTONE

Here, accounting gives you an opportunity to understand the entire business.

You'll see how projects are built, how financial decisions affect operations, how project performance flows into company results, and how accurate financial information helps leaders make better decisions.

You'll work alongside people who value accountability, collaboration, initiative, and continuous improvement while building accounting experience that goes far beyond transaction processing.
