This person should be detail-oriented, responsive, and comfortable working with tight payroll deadlines while providing strong service to employees and managers. Experience with union or Canadian payroll is a plus, but the biggest priorities are strong Workday experience, multi-state payroll knowledge, and a sense of urgency around getting employees paid accurately and on time.

- Process and reconcile payroll in Workday, including time and attendance, earnings, deductions, direct deposits, garnishments, compensation changes, new hires, terminations, and manual payments.
- Review and audit payroll prior to transmission, identify discrepancies, and take immediate ownership of resolving missed or incorrect employee payments.
- Ensure payroll is processed accurately and in compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and provincial requirements, while coordinating payroll tax activities with the third-party tax provider.
- Reconcile time and attendance information, research variances, and partner with managers to correct timekeeping or scheduling discrepancies before payroll is finalized.
- Maintain payroll-related Workday setup, including earning and deduction codes, tax tables, job and department information, bonus plans, and time and labor configurations.
- Respond to employee and manager payroll questions with a strong sense of urgency, providing clear and accurate resolution to pay, deduction, tax, and timekeeping issues.
- Support payroll audits, reporting, garnishments, accruals, tax notices, workers' compensation payments, and other recurring payroll compliance activities.
- Document and improve payroll processes, develop standard work and training materials, and help train employees, managers, and payroll team members.
- Support payroll-related projects and organizational changes, including Workday configuration, acquisitions, reorganizations, payroll frequency changes, and process improvements.
What You'll Have:
- 5+ years of hands-on payroll processing experience, preferably within a complex organization supporting both hourly and salaried employee populations.
- Strong Workday Payroll experience is required, including hands-on payroll processing, auditing, troubleshooting, reporting, and maintaining payroll-related information within the system.
- Demonstrated experience processing multi-state payroll, with a strong understanding of the complexities associated with employees working across multiple state and local jurisdictions.
- Strong working knowledge of payroll fundamentals, including time and attendance, overtime, payroll taxes, deductions, garnishments, accruals, manual checks, and payroll reconciliations.
- Experience supporting a sizable hourly workforce and reconciling timekeeping information prior to payroll processing; union payroll experience is a plus.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements and the ability to effectively partner with a third-party payroll tax provider; Canadian payroll exposure is a plus, not required.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly identify the cause of a payroll issue and take ownership through resolution.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple payroll deadlines and confidential employee information in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong Excel skills and experience using payroll data for reconciliations, audits, reporting, and research.
- Strong employee-service and communication skills; CPP certification and Workday configuration or implementation experience are preferred but not required.
