We are currently seeking a Sr Materials Engineer - Polymers to join our Core R&D team for Medtronic Neuromodulation and Pelvic Health. This will be on a hybrid schedule with 3 days onsite in Rice Creek, Minnesota.

In this position, you will be responsible for analyzing, researching, designing, developing, and optimizing materials and their related fabrication processes for use and application in medical device structures, systems, and subsystems. You will use your Material Science knowledge with an emphasis on polymer science, materials testing, processing, manufacturing, and analysis. You will work independently under limited supervision to determine and develop approaches to solutions and deliver results. You may manage projects/processes and may act as a mentor to colleagues or direct the work of other lower-level professionals.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

• Designing and conducting experiments to evaluate material properties, including chemical, mechanical, electrical, and material compatibility with processes, other materials, drugs, and the body for various applications.

• Applying principles of chemistry, physics, and material science to develop material and processing specifications.
• Developing, analyzing, and applying material property and design allowances, processing parameters and quality engineering specifications.
• Researching, testing, and developing advanced applications of materials for implantable devices, e.g., conductive polymers, biocompatible coatings, flexible substrates, and materials for drug delivery combination products.
• Analyzing and interpreting experimental results, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers, to develop and optimize device components and ensure their successful integration.
• Contributing to the completion of work group objectives by building relationships and reaching consensus.
• Material analyses that may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition of specifications and requirements.
• Supporting the regulatory submission of both implantable and non-implantable Medtronic products.
• Supporting evaluation of hazardous substances and materials of concern in scope of various industry and international regulations
• Supporting biological evaluations per ISO 10993 and similar standards which may include developing materials-based evidence and rationales to support biological safety for change management.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

• Bachelors degree in a technical discipline required
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

• Advanced degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Biomedical Engineering with Materials focus on polymer chemistry, polymer physics, or similar
• Four years of R&D materials engineering experience
• Experience with polymer materials processing, manufacturing, testing, characterization, and analysis, within a regulated industry.
• Experience in biomaterials within the medical device industry, specifically polymers.
• Experience evaluating biostability and biocompatibility, specifically of implantable medical devices, and a familiarity with relevant international standards.
• Experience with drug delivery, combination products, and material-pharmaceutical interactions.
• Experience using Design of experiments (DOE), Gage R&R analyses, six-sigma and lean design tools.
• Strong experience with experimental design and data analysis in chemical and physical materials characterization techniques such as FTIR, NMR, LC, MS, SEM, EDS, EBSD, TGA, DSC, DMA, XRF, and mechanical testing.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$106,400.00 - $159,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
