Job summary

Southwest Airlines is seeking a Senior Engineer to support Service Engineering, ensuring safety, reliability, and operational readiness of the fleet. The role oversees aircraft, engine, and component repairs and troubleshooting during AOG events, partnering with Technical Operations to develop technical solutions.

Based at the Dallas, TX headquarters, you will mentor junior engineers and coordinate with OEM/PMAs while delivering engineering guidance for safe, compliant operations.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of FARs with emphasis on Part 25 and Part 121 operations.
• CAD skills for designing and reviewing engineering drawings.
• Ability to collect, organize and interpret data to support engineering decisions.

Job Description:

The Senior Engineer supports Service Engineering by providing advanced engineering expertise that helps maintain the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of Southwest's fleet. They'll oversee specialized aircraft , engine, and component repairs, modifications, and troubleshooting activities while providing critical engineering support for Aircraft on Ground (AOG) and other operational events. They'll partner closely with Technical Operations Teams to evaluate complex maintenance issues, develop technical solutions, and support timely operational decision ‑ making. The Senior Engineer leverages strong technical, analytical, and problem ‑ solving skills to deliver engineering support and ensure safe and reliable aircraft operations.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and process manufacturer's service documents (Service Bulletins, Service Letters, etc.), regulatory requirements (Airworthiness Directives, Notice of Proposed Rule Making, Code of Federal Regulations, etc.)
• Develop and substantiate in-house repairs and modifications for implementation into the SWA maintenance program
• Develop and substantiate reliability improvements through research, root-cause analysis and implementation through corrective action plans
• Conduct various types of cost/benefit analysis
• Collaborate with other departments such as Planning, Supply Chain, Quality, Production and other Stakeholders for assigned projects to develop project implementation plans
• Troubleshoot and resolve in-service issues
• Develop Engineering documentation to support resolution of in-service issues
• Participate in and coordinate activities related to OEM, Supplemental Type Certificate Holder, and PMA products
• Review and approve Engineering documents such as Engineering Orders, Drawings, etc.
• Provide mentorship to Junior Team members and may include training new Employees.
• May perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of FAR's with a strong emphasis on Part 25 requirements and Part 121 operations
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various airline support services
• Knowledge of design techniques and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, drawings, and models
• Skilled in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) skills and experience
• Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
• Skilled in collecting, organizing, visualizing and assimilating data, including turning raw data into meaningful information, using data-oriented programs and visualization software
• Skilled in communicating effectively inside and outside the Technical Operations organization
• Ability to assimilate technical data for verbal and written response to SWA Leaders and regulatory authorities
• Ability to work well with others as part of a Team and under tight time constraints to accomplish assignments and projects

Education

• Required: High School Diploma or GED

Experience

• Advanced level experience, seasoned and specialized knowledge in: Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering
