Job summary

Qualifications

• Accredited Senior High School Diploma or equivalent, plus one of: Associate degree, 48 college credit hours, or pass an academic assessment.
• Paraprofessional certificate required from State Board of Certification.
• Successful completion of a specific training program for teacher assistants or six months of knowledge and skills gained through work experience preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of child growth/development and behavior characteristics.
• Ability to work with people from diverse ethnic groups.

Responsibilities

• Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and prepare classroom according to student needs.
• Assist with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment.
• Keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitutes teachers.
• Assist students with physical disabilities including transfers, lifting, and positioning.
• Support students with personal care and hygiene needs.
• Assist with classroom curriculum and instructional activities.
• Help manage behavior and intervene in crises as needed.
• Support individualized learning and adapt to each student's needs.
• Supervise students during the day including lunchroom, bus, and playground duties.
• Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems and maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in staff development, meetings, and events.
