Qualifications

• Accredited Senior High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Paraprofessional certificate required from State Board of Certification.
• Successful completion of a training program for teacher assistants or 6 months experience preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of child growth, behavior and development.
• Ability to work with diverse groups and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays
• Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom and prepare classroom according to student needs
• Help with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment
• Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
• Assist students with physical disabilities including transferring to and from wheelchairs
• Assist students with personal care and hygiene needs
• Assist with classroom curriculum
• Help manage behavior and intervene in crisis
• Monitor individual students or small groups to develop motor skills
• Supervise students during lunch, on buses and on playground
• Keep teacher informed of student needs and maintain confidentiality
• Participate in staff development, meetings and events
