Qualifications

• Accredited Senior High School Diploma or equivalent, plus one: Associate degree, 48 college credit hours, or pass an academic assessment.
• Paraprofessional certificate from State Board of Certification is required.
• Completion of a specific training program for teacher assistants or 6 months related experience preferred.
• Knowledge of child growth/development and behavior.
• Ability to work with diverse ethnic groups.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to meet job goals.
• Initiative and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Flexibility to adapt to changes in the profession.
• Willingness to stay current with developments in the field.

Responsibilities

• Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and prepare it according to student needs.
• Assist with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment.
• Keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitutes teachers.
• Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers and positioning.
• Assist with personal care and basic needs of students.
• Support classroom curriculum and instructional activities.
• Assist with behavior management and safety.
• Work with individuals or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct exercises.
• Supervise students during the day including lunch, bus, and playground duties.
• Maintain confidentiality and participate in staff development.
