Qualifications

• Accredited high school diploma or equivalent; plus one of: associate degree, 48 college credits, or pass an academic assessment.
• Paraprofessional certificate required from State Board of Certification.
• Completion of a specific training program for teacher assistants or relevant work experience preferred.
• General knowledge of child growth and behavior.
• Ability to work with people from diverse ethnic groups.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and prepare space for student needs.
• Assist with inventory, equipment care and maintenance.
• Maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers and positioning.
• Support personal care and day-to-day needs for students as required.
• Assist with curriculum and manage student behavior, including crisis intervention.
• Adapt to individual medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
• Supervise students during lunch, bus, and playground activities.
• Keep teacher informed of student needs and maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in staff development, meetings, and events.
