Job summary

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle is seeking a Specimen Processing Services Specialist I to support transfusion-related and lab processing activities. The role focuses on timely specimen handling, venipuncture, and alignment with quality programs on a fully onsite basis at the South Lake Union Campus.

The position requires high school graduation, basic medical terminology knowledge, ability to lift 25 lbs, solid computer/email/data-entry skills, and color vision.

Qualifications

  • Required: high school graduation or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Proficient in email and data entry in a Windows-based environment.
  • Must be able to differentiate between colors and pass a color vision screen.
  • Preferred: phlebotomy training course.
  • Preferred: Washington MA/Phlebotomist certification.
  • Preferred: specimen handling and processing experience including accessioning, centrifuge, aliquoting, sendouts and blood banking.
  • Preferred: EPIC/Cadence experience and phone handling.

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen processing of blood specimens.
  • Performs venipuncture phlebotomy on patients, donors, research participants and employees where required.
  • Able to learn computer skills in a timely manner.
  • Processes specimens including centrifugation, aliquoting, and dispensing to proper lab processing and sendout sites.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance programs and projects.
  • Records variances of standard policies and procedures in Patient Safety Net accurately and where required.
  • Receives patients at the Alliance Laboratory for blood draw appointments and schedules walk-in appointments.
  • May cover alternative shifts or weekends as needed per staffing.
