Job summary

Prince George County Public Schools is seeking a Substitute Bus Driver Aide – Special Needs to support safety and care for handicapped students loading and unloading, and during in-route transportation. The role reports to the Director of Transportation and involves operating lifts, securing students, and assisting with emergency drills.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, state physical exams, and First Aid certification.

Qualifications

• Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate.
• Meet state physical examination requirements.
• National Red Cross First Aid Course completed.
• Ability to manage exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders.
• Ability to recognize problems and move quickly to solve them.

Responsibilities

• Operate hydraulic-lift equipment bus to load and unload wheelchair-confined students.
• Secure each student using harnesses, belts, wheelchair locks or safety equipment.
• Maintain discipline per division regulations.
• Assist in emergency evacuation drills per division regulations.
• Instruct riders to be responsible passengers.
• Report personal absences in time for supervisor to secure substitute aide.
• Know the physical and/or emotional handicap of each student on the bus.
• Be alert and exercise good judgement in emergencies and special requests by parents.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
