Job summary

Orange County Public Schools is seeking a paraprofessional to provide instructional, vocational and developmental assistance to students with exceptional needs under supervision. This role supports teachers and works with certified staff to aid in learning, behavior management, and daily activities.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and at least two years working with school-age children; completion of ESE training within 45 days of hire is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; minimum two (2) years working with school age children in an educational environment that provides broad familiarity and understanding of the physical and emotional behaviors and challenges of exceptional needs children.
• Completion of ESE Training within 45 days of date of hire is required for all new hires.
• Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work; occupationally trained to assist in classroom activities.

Responsibilities

• Provides instructional, vocational and developmental assistance to mentally, physically, emotionally disabled and other special needs students, as prescribed by supervising teacher.
• Assists students as they arrive on buses and transfers them to and from learning areas; helps move students from wheelchairs to desks or mats.
• Assists students with gross and fine motor activities and with daily living skills.
• Monitors, observes, and documents student behavior and prepares instructional materials with input from teachers.
• Supports teachers in lesson planning and classroom activities; maintains accurate records of student activities and behavior.
• May supervise hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, and bus duty; ensures appropriate student conduct; escorts students to activity areas.
• May translate lesson plans and information for better understanding; stays current with technology used by OCPS.
