Job summary

Tuscaloosa City Schools seeks a Special Education Aide to support certified teachers in classrooms. Under supervision, you will perform academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks, assist with small groups, and help individual students needing extra attention.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED with 48 college hours or an associate degree, and completion of Work Keys tests, with a focus on confidentiality and professional standards in a school setting.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED and 48 college hours or an associate degree from an accredited institution.
• Passed the Work Keys Test as mandated by the Alabama State Department of Education.
• Must meet the suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Responsibilities

• Performs academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified special education teacher(s).
• Works with small groups of students to reinforce and re-teach material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
• Works with individual students who need special attention.
• Assists in the guidance of independent study, enrichment work, and remedial help as specified by the teacher(s).
• Assists the teacher(s) with students in rote memorization, reading and storytelling activities as appropriate.
• Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties.
• Assists with preparing instructional aids, bulletin boards and other learning displays.
• Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, break, personal hygiene/clothing needs, etc.
