Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is recruiting a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support teachers and students in elementary and high schools. You will work with students with various disabilities under each student’s IEP, assisting in daily living skills, academic tasks, and behavior monitoring.

The role requires a valid ISBE paraprofessional license (TASN/NCLB) or equivalent, plus CPR training if available. This is an on-site position with CPS benefits and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the ISBE.
• Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit or completion of a paraprofessional exam (Work Keys or Parapro).
• Knowledge of characteristics of students with various disabilities; good command of English grammar and basic math.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities and follow written and oral instructions; CPR training is desirable and may be required.
• Good oral and written communication skills; ability to operate classroom equipment is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Assist Special Education teachers in reinforcing instruction for students with disabilities.
• Lift and position non-ambulatory students as instructed by the teacher.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring and personal hygiene assistance as needed.
• Assist with tools and equipment used in classrooms (tables, wheelchairs, devices).
• Maintain notes on student behavior and help keep records.
• Accompany students and teachers on class trips and activities.
