Job summary

Seattle Public Schools seeks a Special Education Assistant to support students with special needs in regular or self-contained classrooms. You will help implement IEP plans, monitor behavior, and assist in delivering instruction under the teacher’s direction.

The role covers varying settings and may involve generalist or specialized needs across programs; involves meetings, safety duties, and collaboration with staff and families.

Qualifications

• Must have completed ETS paraeducator assessment or hold an associate degree or higher or 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100-level or higher or completion of paraeducator apprenticeship registered with WA Apprenticeship Council.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities and materials under teacher direction to include all students.
• Administers tests, homework, grades, papers, and folders to assist teacher in monitoring progress.
• Provides first aid/medical assistance as required for student care.
• Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions to enable school functioning.
• Attends meetings/training (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) for job-related knowledge.
• Confers with teachers on evaluating progress and implementing IEP objectives.
• Communicates with teachers/parents about student progress and IEPs.
• Implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders to ensure safety.
• Instructs students in activities (academics, social, daily living) per IEP goals.
• Maintains instructional materials and student files/records for reliability.
• Monitors students across environments to ensure safe, positive learning.
