Job summary

Seattle Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Assistant Substitute to support students with special needs in regular or self-contained classrooms. You will assist in implementing instructional plans, monitor behavior, and participate in IEP meetings as requested.

The role involves adapting activities, administering assignments, and providing safety and care to students with various needs, including behavior and medical support, under teacher direction.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and 1) completion of an associate degree, OR 2) completion of two years of college, not a degree but seventy-two (72) quarter hours or forty-eight (48) semester hours of college credit, or 3) a passing score on the Praxis Parapro Assessment Test.
• One (1) year of related paid or volunteer work experience.
• Certification as a special education teacher will substitute for the experience requirement.
• Education and work experience of categorically funded positions must be in compliance with applicable federal and state guidelines.
• Valid State of Washington Driver's License
• CPR/First Aid and Secure Training are required.

Responsibilities

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments and materials to enable participation for all students.
• Assists in evaluating progress and organizing student needs through various materials and assignments.
• Administers first aid and medical assistance as required for student care.
• Supports students with personal care needs to enable functioning in school.
• Implements behavioral plans to meet student needs and safety.
• Instructs students individually and in groups to reinforce instructional objectives.
• Maintains instructional materials and student files to ensure availability of items.
