Job description

The New York City Department of Investigation ("DOI") is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country, with a mission to combat municipal corruption. It serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for the City government, agencies, employees, vendors with City contracts, and recipients of City funds.

Position: Special Counsel/Assistant Inspector General

DOI's Squad 5 oversees City-elected officials, City-funded not-for-profit organizations, City agencies involved in elections, and several other departments. We seek a highly skilled and motivated attorney to conduct confidential investigations into corruption, fraud, waste, and misconduct involving City officials, employees, and entities doing business with the City.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Drafting and editing investigative reports and legal memoranda;
  2. Reviewing legal documents, financial records, contracts, and policies;
  3. Conducting legal research and analysis;
  4. Preparing subpoenas and managing responses;
  5. Interviewing witnesses and subjects;
  6. Collaborating with investigative units, prosecutors, and City agencies.
Qualifications:
  • Extensive legal writing experience, including investigative reports and case referrals;
  • Ability to draft subpoenas, court orders, and legal correspondence;
  • Background check and fingerprinting required; consumer credit history review applicable for investigative roles.
Minimum Qualifications:

Either:

  1. Baccalaureate degree plus four years of relevant experience, including 18 months in a supervisory or managerial role, approved by the Commissioner of Investigation; or
  2. Equivalent education/experience with approval and supervisory experience or significant policy-related judgment experience.
Preferred Skills:
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • Active bar membership from any U.S. jurisdiction;
  • At least five years of relevant legal experience in investigations, litigation, or government;
  • Strong legal writing, interviewing, and technological skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment;
  • Knowledge of NYC government is a plus.
Additional Information:
