Job summary

Duke Health is seeking an interpreter to support the Duke Children's and Internal Medicine North Durham clinic. You will provide face-to-face and remote interpretation, and translate clinical documents to help non-English-speaking patients understand their care and treatment plans.

This role emphasizes neutrality, confidentiality, and accurate message conveyance. Candidates should have a high school diploma, medical terminology knowledge, and healthcare experience; NIC certification is required

Qualifications

• High-School Diploma or equivalent; testing for translation competency required.
• Knowledge of Medical Terminology.
• Previous experience in a Health Care setting preferred.
• For ASL positions: National Interpreter Certification (NIC) required.

Responsibilities

• Face-to-face interpretation for medical appointments
• Phone/ video interpretation
• Translation of documentation for providers/clinicians
• Serve as neutral conduit between Duke staff and non-English-speaking patients/visitors
• Ensure accurate communication of outpatient services and hospitalization information
• Address patient questions and document per Risk Management directives
• Maintain confidentiality of all assignment-related information
• Provide interpreter services and convey exact messages, avoiding personal bias
• Do not accept assignments beyond professional skills or fluency
• Promote customer satisfaction and escalate issues as needed
• Participate in continuing education and competency training
