Job summary

Blue Origin seeks a skilled automation engineer to design and implement automated NDT inspection systems for spaceflight hardware. You will lead robot cell design, select components, program PLCs and robots, and develop fixtures and EOAT for ultrasonic, eddy current, penetrant and radiographic methods.

You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to translate quality requirements, ensure safety, and drive production efficiency while mentoring technicians and supporting in-service

Qualifications

• 3+ years automation experience with one or more robotic systems (Kuka, Fanuc, ABB, Yaskawa, Staubli)
• Experience with offline programming environments (Siemens Process Simulate, ABB RobotStudio, Fanuc Roboguide, KukaSim)
• Understanding of ABB RAPID, Fanuc Karel, or similar languages
• Proven fixture and end-of-arm tooling design experience
• CAD experience, CREO preferred
• Experience with automated metrology/NDT systems using gantries or 6-axis robots
• PLC programming with Ladder Logic/Function Blocks/Structured Text
• Team leadership in automating factory processes to fully-commissioned states
• Knowledge of actuators (electric/pneumatic/hydraulic)
• Experience with Ethernet/IP, Fieldbus, Modbus
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to train technicians
• Ability to build trust and promote inclusion
• U.S. citizenship or eligible status per export control requirements
• B.S. in engineering/physical sciences or equivalent
• Proficiency in languages (C#, C++, Python, Matlab)
• Experience repairing multi-robot systems and BOM creation
• Knowledge of machine vision/metrology scanners
• Experience with welding, casting, additive manufacturing, composites fabrication
• Experience designing custom tooling

Responsibilities

• Drive robot cell design from first principles
• Select and source robot and electrical/safety components
• Design and implement I/O schemes
• Program PLCs and robots
• Design fixtures and EOAT
• Install and test robot cells
• Use robot cells to collect inspection data and validate requirements
• Collaborate with POD SMEs to meet 90/95 flaw detection rules
• Automate inspection systems for ultrasonic/eddy current/penetrant/radiographic methods
• Support in-service NDT inspections and provide method validations
• Review and approve drawings
• Commit to safety, quality and production rate improvements
