Job summary

Viasat is seeking a Hardware Design Engineer to lead end-to-end development of advanced digital processing systems and FPGA-based subsystems for space and mission-critical platforms. You will own hardware lifecycles from requirements through RTL development, board bring-up, and flight qualification, collaborating with cross-functional teams in a demanding aerospace environment.

The role requires a strong background in high-speed digital design, SystemVerilog/Verilog/VHDL, and hands-on toolchains

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 4+ years in high-speed digital board design and FPGA/RTL development.
• Proficiency in synthesizable RTL in SystemVerilog, Verilog, or VHDL.
• Hands-on experience with FPGA design suites and EDA tools (Vivado, Quartus, Synplify).
• Hands-on experience with schematic capture tools (Mentor Xpedition, Cadence, Altium).
• Strong lab debugging skills integrating firmware onto physical boards.
• US citizenship required.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.
• Master’s degree in EE is a plus.
• Experience with space-grade FPGAs and radiation tolerance is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement high-speed digital boards, including schematic capture and layout guidelines.
• Develop, simulate, and verify FPGA RTL (SystemVerilog/Verilog/VHDL) for control, data processing, and communication functions.
• Integrate and deploy firmware onto FPGA and FPGA SoC platforms.
• Design high-speed interfaces (DDR4, SERDES, UART, I2C, SPI, LVDS) and run signal/power integrity simulations.
• Conduct worst-case analysis to verify margins in space environments.
• Lead lab bring-up, hardware/firmware integration, and debugging with test equipment.
• Apply flight hardware and firmware design practices under radiation-tolerant constraints.
• Produce and maintain design documentation (schematics, block diagrams, testbenches, interfaces).
