Job summary

Colorado School of Mines is seeking a Research Technical Staff in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department to independently execute research tasks related to large-scale solvent extraction and hydrometallurgical processing. The role involves experimental design, data analysis, and documenting results, with periodic industry collaboration and travel.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in metallurgy, chemical engineering, mining engineering, materials engineering, or related field with focus on critical metals extraction, extractive metallurgy and waste recycling.
  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale solvent extraction.
  • Experience with chemical precipitation and ion exchange is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in research activities within the Kim Research Group.
  • Conduct research on hydrometallurgical separation and recovery of metals with a focus on solvent extraction.
  • Design, plan, and perform large-scale solvent extraction experiments.
  • Develop and optimize solvent extraction processes for rare earth element purification, translating lab to pilot scale.
  • Perform complementary hydrometallurgical processing activities (precipitation, ion exchange) as needed.
  • Analyze data and communicate progress through meetings and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with academic and industry partners to support objectives and scale-up.
