Qualifications

• Ability to perform repetitive outdoor work with physical effort.
• Knowledge of safety rules and proper use of tools.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions precisely.
• Ability to read and write English.

Responsibilities

• Rides on the back of a garbage or recycling collection truck and collects solid waste on a designated route.
• Operates packer machinery mounted on vehicle to pack refuse.
• Loads and unloads varied materials using hand tools.
• Directs driver when backing up and directs incoming vehicles to dumping area.
• Examines waste loads to prevent disposal of contraband waste.
• Sweeps and picks up refuse from streets, gutters, and sidewalks.
• Checks operating and safety conditions of vehicles and performs minor servicing.
• Performs minor construction and general maintenance tasks such as repairs and painting.
• Cleans and maintains solid waste buildings and facility areas.
• Performs grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing and watering.
• Demonstrates proficiency in City of Jacksonville competencies.
