Job summary

The City of Savannah is hiring a Solid Waste Worker to join the Sanitation Team. You will collect residential refuse, yard waste, bulk items, recyclables, and remove litter from city streets.

This is a critical workforce position with no prior experience required. You must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and work Mon-Thu 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at 1809 W. Hwy 80.

Background investigations, post-offer medical screening, and verification of education and licenses are required before employment.

Qualifications

• No prior experience required.
• Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen; and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
• Ability to lift items up to forty (40) pounds.
• Knowledge of department safety procedures.
• Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
• Skill in the operation of hydraulic lift and press mechanism.
• Skill in oral communication.

Responsibilities

• Performs manual labor in day-to-day Sanitation Department operations.
• Serves as a spotter to assist truck operator in safely backing up and maneuvering in congested spaces.
• May assist truck operator with determining correct routes.
• Operates hydraulic lift and press.
• Maintains inventory of tools assigned to the truck.
• Collects household refuse.
• Directs traffic as needed.
• Collects recyclable materials.
• Collects litter, changes litter baskets.
• Collects yard waste, bulk items, and dead animals.
• Cleans vehicles and equipment at end of route.
• Assembles, delivers, repairs, cleans, and collects refuse carts as assigned.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
