Job summary

City of Abilene seeks an Equipment Operator I/II to safely operate solid waste collection trucks and related equipment on residential, commercial, or special routes. You will perform vehicle inspections, maintain records, and ensure timely collection while following safety regulations.

You may assist with manual tasks, load materials, and keep routes clean. CDL is required; entry-level or training paths apply for Operator I with potential advancement to Operator II.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of operating characteristics and servicing of solid waste handling equipment.
• Work hazards and safety precautions related to assigned equipment.
• Traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations for operation of assigned equipment.
• Safe driving principles and practices.

Responsibilities

• Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles and other Solid Waste Service equipment.
• Pick up trash, brush, litter, bulky items, and recyclables.
• Read street maps and route sheets to locate destinations.
• Perform basic vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Check, service, and clean equipment.
• Maintain vehicle records.
• Complete routes safely and follow Division safety rules.
• Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or injuries to supervisor.
• Dump collected waste at designated dump sites/landfills.
• Operator II: complete routes without assistance, train Operator I staff, supervise safe practices.
