Job summary

The City of Abilene is seeking an Equipment Operator I/II to safely operate solid waste collection vehicles on residential, commercial, and special routes. You will perform routine inspections, maintain records, and ensure timely collection with adherence to safety rules.

Operator II may supervise Operator I and train new staff. A Texas CDL is required, with a high school diploma or GED, and completion of Solid Waste Equipment Training.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid Texas Class A or B CDL required.
• Experience or training relevant to solid waste equipment.
• Completion of Solid Waste Equipment Training is required.
• Physical requirements as described in the job posting.

Responsibilities

• Operate trash collection or recycling vehicles and related equipment.
• Perform route-based collection of trash, brush, and recycling materials.
• Read street maps and route sheets to locate destinations.
• Perform basic vehicle inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Maintain vehicle records and safety logs.
• Safely complete assigned routes and report unsafe conditions.
• Dump collected materials at designated sites.
• Train and supervise Equipment Operator I staff as needed.
