Our client is a fast-growing, mid-market solar development firm specializing in Commercial and Industrial (C&I) and Distributed Generation (DG) solar projects—typically around 1 - 10 MW in size. Their mission is simple: deliver high-quality, tailored solar solutions for a diverse client base through flexible service models, including design engineering, owner’s representation, construction, and commissioning support.

Headquartered in Kansas City, our client punches well above its weight with a small, adaptable team that thrives on solving unique, real-world energy challenges. Whether it’s optimizing a system for a complex site or guiding a client through permitting and utility interconnection, they take pride in doing the work others won’t—or can’t.

About the Role

We’re hiring a Solar DG Design/Field Engineer to strengthen our client's growing technical team and support project execution across multiple phases. This hybrid role offers a dynamic mix of office-based engineering and on-site fieldwork, ideal for someone early in their solar career who’s hungry to learn, solve problems, and grow.

You'll play a critical role in translating designs into reality, ensuring construction is completed to spec, and helping keep our projects on track—while contributing your insights to streamline and scale their internal processes.

What You'll Do

  • Support the engineering and design of solar PV systems for C&I projects (primarily under 10MW).
  • Act as the bridge between design and field execution, ensuring the intent is understood and implemented correctly on site.
  • Work directly with subcontractors, vendors, and project managers during construction and commissioning.
  • Perform site visits (~30% travel, mostly Kansas City area) to monitor progress, resolve issues, and conduct QA/QC.
  • Participate in design handoffs, pre-construction walkthroughs, and punch list closeouts.
  • Review and assist with construction documents, including single-line diagrams, layouts, and equipment specifications.
  • Contribute to improving workflows and documentation as they scale their operations.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience with solar PV design—C&I, utility-scale, or DG.
  • Field experience supporting construction, installation, or project oversight.
  • A self-starter attitude with the energy and desire to be hands-on in both the office and the field.
  • Strong organization and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Comfort working in a small, agile team environment with shifting priorities.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and resolving site-level issues in real-time.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design tools (hands-on drafting not required).
  • Knowledge of permitting, interconnection, and commissioning processes.
  • Background in construction management or electrical/solar engineering.
  • Engineering degree (not required); PE license not required.
  • Hybrid work model: Expect in-office collaboration 1–2 times per week at their Kansas City HQ.
  • ~30% travel: Primarily to regional sites in Kansas and Missouri, with occasional travel to out-of-state locations such as Columbus.
