Department Overview

Our Utility Services Department partners with utility and communication companies in engineering and construction, focusing on joint use pole attachment programs and distribution engineering design projects.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Distribution Engineer to support projects within our Utility Services Department in the Kansas City area. This position offers remote work options but requires residency within a reasonable commuting distance to serve local projects.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepare and develop distribution voltage construction packages for overhead and underground projects.
  2. Assist with distribution line design (2.4kV - 34kV).
  3. Collaborate with designers and engineers to prepare and modify drawings and create as-built documents.
  4. Assist in preparing proposals, cost estimates, and schedules.
  5. Provide technical support to customers and support regional business development.
  6. Review work for quality and adherence to QA/QC processes.
  7. Perform calculations and specify equipment.
  8. Evaluate equipment loading and structural integrity for safe and cost-effective designs.
  9. Inspect and record equipment and construction conditions in the field.
  10. Apply relevant standards and guidelines to engineering designs.
  11. Analyze field data and update software for design implementation.
  12. Utilize proprietary software for design workflows and permitting processes.
  13. Complete assigned work on schedule and within budget, maintaining communication with management.
  14. Coordinate with clients to optimize project solutions.
  15. Document work and support project accounting.
  16. Record data accurately and organize notes systematically.
  17. Work outdoors in various weather conditions and in different environments.
  18. Participate in fieldwork as needed during the design process.
  19. Travel overnight or for extended periods based on project needs.
  20. Attend client meetings and interact with landowners and operators.
  21. Reside within commuting distance to the Kansas City area.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, preferably electrical.
  • Knowledge of electric utility industry concepts, including distribution systems and standards.
  • Understanding of basic engineering principles.
  • Strong attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS, and distribution design software.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license, dependable transportation, and insurance.
  • Ability to pass a fit-for-duty test and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification.
  • Willingness to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Experience with electrical distribution assets or communication equipment.
  • Knowledge of pole loading and construction modeling software.
  • Familiarity with utility software like SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS.
  • Understanding of safe work practices and PPE.
