Job description

The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. Position: Entry Level Field Technician

Located in Canton, MI, this role primarily supports supervisory staff and other professionals by performing field testing and inspections of concrete, masonry, soils, aggregates, and asphalt for various private and public projects.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct tests on concrete, masonry, soils, aggregates, and asphalt.
  2. Travel daily to construction sites, with occasional overnight or weekend work (local, out of state, Canada, etc.).
  3. Report observations and test results to project managers or engineers.
  4. Transport equipment, test specimens, and documents; assist with equipment setup.
  5. Prepare and submit daily field observation and summary reports electronically.
  6. Perform field density and quality control tests on construction materials.
  7. Support other technicians or departments as needed.
  8. Adhere to safety protocols, interpret construction plans and specifications, and comply with quality control plans and SOPs.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
  1. Knowledge of environmental regulations, remediation techniques, and geotechnical principles (preferred but not required).
  2. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  3. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting equipment, moving soil samples, and standing for extended periods. Willingness to travel to project sites is required.
Qualifications
  1. American Concrete Institute (ACI) Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification.
  2. Nuclear Density Certification.
  3. Preference for certifications such as ICC, NICET, CWI, etc.
  4. Technical or associate’s degree and relevant work experience are a plus. Experience in materials testing, geotechnical drilling, or soil-related fields is advantageous.
