Job summary

Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield invites enrolled students for the 2027 Summer Internship Program in Des Moines, IA, within the Technology Health Plan Intern department. This hybrid internship offers hands-on work in application modernization, API integration, UI improvements, and process optimization.

You’ll contribute to real-world projects with guidance from experienced engineers, work on SOAP/REST APIs, and help design a data-mapping tool while learning the medical product configuration

Qualifications

• Current junior or senior pursuing a bachelor's degree, or current master's student, in Computer Science, MIS, Software Engineering, IT, Data Science, or related field.
• Foundational knowledge of software development technologies such as TypeScript, REST API, AWS native, API enabling technology, NODE and SDLC.
• Strong analytical problem-solving skills, accuracy, attention to detail, and self-starter.
• Ability to troubleshoot and develop creative technical solutions.
• Demonstrated computer skills with software development tools (preferably Visual Studio) and MS Office products (Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Excellent writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Support the conversion and modernization of existing SOAP/REST APIs, gaining hands-on experience with architecture, integrations, and modern development practices.
• Identify and implement enhancements to existing user interfaces to improve usability and functionality.
• Design, build, and test new features within existing user interfaces based on business needs.
• Contribute to modernization initiatives by evaluating existing components and assisting with updates that improve maintainability and UX.
• Help design and develop a new tool to support data mapping, including requirements, building functionality, and testing.
• Learn the medical product configuration process and contribute to improving tools, workflows, or processes.
