Job summary

U-Haul is seeking an experienced Software Developer to join the Core Services - Contract Software Development Team in Phoenix. You will design, develop, and maintain APIs and services on the Microsoft stack, with Kafka-driven event streaming and Azure-based deployments, ensuring scalable, resilient solutions.

You will create robust interfaces, collaborate across teams, and continuously improve architecture and tooling.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years in software development with a bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Proficiency in Object Oriented programming and modern design principles.
• Experience with Kafka or similar event streams and pub/sub relationships.
• Strong understanding of scalable, resilient systems and modern best practices.
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills and clear communication.

About the Role:

U-Haul is seeking a talented and experienced Software Developer to join our Core Services - Contract Software Development Team. This team is integral to our operations, supporting multiple critical systems that are at the heart of the U-Haul software ecosystem. As a Software Developer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining robust and scalable APIs/services and supporting UIs using the complete Microsoft Stack, .NET, C#, SQL, Postgres, modern front-end frameworks and libraries, and supporting technologies. Our systems are built around Kafka event streams, emphasizing resiliency and scalability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software solutions using the full Microsoft stack and supporting technologies.

• Implement and manage event-driven architectures using Kafka event streams.

• Apply modern software design principles to design scalable and resilient systems.

• Provision, monitor, and maintain cloud-based resources and systems via Azure Portal.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and various businesses within the company to solve unique opportunities.

• Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize existing software applications.

• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices to ensure continuous improvement.

• Understand how systems work together in a big picture sense and integrate multiple applications efficiently.

Common Skills and Requirements:

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years in software development and bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Technologies: Proficiency in Object Oriented programming languages and design as well as strong database experience.
• Event-Driven Architecture: Experience with Kafka or similar event streams and producer/consumer or pub/sub relationships.
• Design Principles: Strong understanding of modern software design principles and its application in scalable systems, understanding of modern software best practices.
• Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work efficiently and professionally with team members and other teams. Must be a self‑starter and passionate about personal and professional growth within the field.
• Team Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to maintain constant communication and be accommodating to questions and requests from other teams.
• Tools: Experience with complete Microsoft Stack and Azure (DevOps and Cloud Portal), Kibana/Elastic Search/Grafana, Dynatrace, Data Design/Creation/Querying/Stored Procedures, WCF/REST/WebAPIs and API testing tools.
• Adaptability: Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly. A desire to work on and explore new technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with cloud platforms and services.
• Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with Scrumban Agile methodology.
• Previous experience designing scalable APIs.
