Job summary

PTC Alliance in Liberty, TX is seeking a Slitter Exit Operator to support the exit end of the slitting line, ensuring safe, efficient handling of slit steel strips from recoiling to packaging and loading for the tube mill.

The role requires teamwork, clear communication, and adherence to quality procedures, with focus on maintaining line tension, alignment, and safe operation of heavy equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–3 years in steel processing, slitting, or tube mill preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate recoiler spindle to wind strips tightly and evenly.
  • Set up exit overarm separators to keep slit strands aligned.
  • Control exit line tension to meet specifications.
  • Operate heavy machinery (coil cars, forklifts, cranes) safely.
  • Secure finished coils with steel bands and straps.
  • Recycle trimmed steel edges using scrap baller or winder.
  • Monitor exit-side processes to meet daily goals.
  • Inspect strips for burrs and width; ensure quality standards.
  • Label coils with heat numbers, gauges, and grades.
  • Maintain communication with entry operators, supervisors, quality dept.
  • Suggest actions for non-conformances and issues.
  • Keep work areas clean and hazard-free.
  • Transfer line status knowledge between shifts.

Job Summary

The Slitter Exit Operator provides operational and technical support to the exit end of the slitting line. The primary objective is to safely and efficiently manage the recoiling, packaging, quality control, and offloading of slit steel strips. This role requires day-to-day teamwork and clear communication to ensure a continuous supply of quality raw material to the tube mill.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate the recoiler spindle to ensure newly cut steel strips are wound tightly, evenly, and without telescoping
  • Set up and adjust exit overarm separators to keep individual slit steel strands aligned and physically isolated
  • Control line tension on the exit side of the slitter to meet precise manufacturing specifications
  • Operate heavy machinery including coil cars, turnstiles, forklifts, and overhead cranes to safely remove finished coils
  • Apply heavy-duty steel bands and straps to secure finished coils and prevent them from springing open
  • Manage scrap materials by operating the scrap baller or winder to safely recycle trimmed steel edges
  • Monitor and control assigned exit-side processes to meet daily production goals
  • Maintain quality awareness by inspecting finished steel strips for burrs, edge defects, and correct width
  • Tag and label each finished coil with critical tracking data, including heat numbers, gauges, and steel grades
  • Maintain open and constant communication with the entry operators, supervisors, and the quality department
  • Suggest best courses of action for non-conformances and unexpected processing challenges
  • Ensure work area(s) are maintained in a clean, organized, and hazard-free manner
  • Ensure transfer of knowledge regarding line status, machine issues, and targets between shifts
  • Understand and follow the PTC Quality Management System policies, procedures, and work instructions
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed and all accidents, hazards, near misses, and property damage are reported in the required time
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Education and/or Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in a steel processing, slitting, or tube mill facility preferred

Candidates must be flexible with shifts, hours, overtime hours, and rotating schedules.
