Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applications for an Apprentice Signal Trainee in the Kansas City area. This hands-on role trains individuals to install, inspect, and maintain critical signal systems essential for safe rail operations.

You will undergo about 52 weeks of classroom and field instruction, with extensive travel during training and on-call requirements. A CDL within 90 days of hire is required; relocation may be needed based on bids within seniority districts.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older and have a high school diploma or GED.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Must pass FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• No disqualifying motor vehicle violations in recent years.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and electrical switch locks.
• Inspect crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
• Support Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
• Use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and heavy equipment.
• Document inspections, repairs, and installations accurately.
• Work safely outdoors in varying weather conditions; on-call and weekend availability required.
