Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corporation in Canton, OH is seeking applicants for the Apprentice Signal Trainee program. The hands-on, field-based training prepares you to install, inspect, and maintain critical signal systems for safe rail operations.

Training lasts about 52 weeks with classroom and field instruction, leading to bid opportunities as a Signal Maintainer. Candidates must be 18+, have a HS diploma or GED, and obtain a ClassA CDL within 90 days.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Must obtain a ClassA CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Pass pre-employment FRA drug and alcohol screening.
• Must not have a conviction for, or completed state action to cancel, revoke, suspend, or deny a motor vehicle license for DUI or similar.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and electrical switch locks.
• Service crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
• Support Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
• Operate hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and heavy equipment.
• Document inspections, repairs, and installations accurately.
• Work safely in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.
• Respond to on-call assignments, including nights and weekends.
