Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corporation seeks a 2026 Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee in Kansas City, MO. This seniority-based union role requires bidding on positions, with extensive training and travel during the 52-week program.

You will join the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) and may need a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire; relocation may be required. Training blends classroom sessions in McDonough, GA with field work across your seniority district.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Must obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days (training provided).
• Must pass FRA drug/alcohol screening.
• Must not have disqualifying motor vehicle offenses.
• Authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and interlocking systems.
• Handle crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
• Work with Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Use hand tools, electrical testing instruments, and heavy equipment.
• Document inspections, repairs, and installations accurately.
• Work safely outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Respond to on-call assignments, including nights and weekends.
