Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking candidates for the 2026 Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee in Chicago, IL. Trainees will undergo a 52-week blend of classroom and field instruction at the NS Training Center, with hands-on experience across seniority districts and potential relocation based on bid outcomes.

Participants must be 18+, hold a HS diploma/GED, obtain a Class A CDL within 90 days, join the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, and be available for on-call work 24/7 during training and after.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire (training provided).
• Pass FRA drug and alcohol screening prior to employment.
• Not have disqualifying motor vehicle violations.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
• Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including lights, switch machines, and locks.
• Work with crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
• Support Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Use hand tools and electrical testing instruments; operate heavy equipment as needed.
• Document inspections, repairs, and installations accurately.
• Work safely in outdoor environments and across varying weather conditions.
• Respond to on-call assignments, including nights and weekends.
