Job summary

Montgomery-Public-Schools in Alabama seeks a certified Sign Language Interpreter to provide ASL interpretation for Deaf and hard of hearing students, ensuring access to instruction and activities under IEP/504/Communication Plans.

The interpreter will support classrooms during school hours, participate in IEP teams, maintain confidentiality, and uphold RID/FERPA/IDEA guidelines, with duties extending to after-school events by arrangement.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must hold a current ALBIT license/permit issued by the Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Transliterators.

Responsibilities

• Provide expressive and voice interpreting including ASL, PSE, or other modalities as per the student’s IEP/504/Communication Plan.
• Assist the student with reviewing or reinforcing instructional content and note-taking when interpreting is not needed.
• Serve as an IEP team member, giving input on communication access needs and participate in IEP development and review.
• Provide interpreting for academic classes and required school functions during regular hours; after-school events may be arranged with notice.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with RID Code of Professional Conduct, FERPA, IDEA, and district policies.
• Act as a liaison to promote good public relations between the student, peers, and staff.
• Collaborate with regular/general education teachers and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher for effective services.
• Maintain and improve signing ability and interpreting skills through ongoing professional development.
• Stay informed of best practices, trends, and legislation related to sign language interpreting in education.
• Demonstrate respect for Deaf culture and communication styles.
• Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills and work independently on assigned tasks.
• Communicate effectively in writing and collect data; perform other duties as assigned.
