Job summary

Decatur City Schools is seeking an interpreter to assist in classrooms for deaf students, translating between ASL and written English under the supervision of a licensed teacher.

Applicants must have ALBIT eligibility, and a one-year certificate or equivalent; SCPI proficiency is required. The role includes one-on-one tutoring, staff instruction, and supervision during lunch and field trips.

Qualifications

  • One year certificate from college or technical school, or three to six months related experience and/or training.
  • At least a rating of intermediate or better on the sign communication proficiency interview (SCPI) Rating Scale.
  • Appropriate credentials must be provided. ALBIT licensing required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides manual interpretation of instruction and classroom directions for student(s) who are deaf.
  • Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality and from the IEP modality to the spoken language.
  • Provides, under the supervision of a certified teacher, instruction to students who are deaf in American Sign Language and written English to enable understanding of concepts.
  • Provides one-on-one assistance and tutoring to student(s).
  • Participates in planning and in-service activities as appropriate.
  • Helps supervise students during lunch periods, assemblies, and field trips and other activities.
