Job summary

The State of North Dakota is seeking a dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication for deaf and hearing students in an educational environment. Responsibilities include classroom interpretation, field trips, assemblies, and after-school activities to ensure accessibility.

You will advocate for deaf students, coordinate services such as interpreters and note-takers, and assist with assignments as needed, including supervision during transport to activities.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED.
  • Proficient in American Sign Language as demonstrated with a Certificate of Completion through completion of an accredited interpreter training program.

  • Facilitate sign language communication between deaf and hearing consumers in educational settings including classrooms and after-school activities.
  • Sign for deaf consumers in direct and overheard conversations using sign language and spoken English to convey intent and content.
  • Advocate for deaf students who may not be able to advocate for themselves, coordinating interpreters, note-takers, and other services as needed.
  • Provide deaf students with assistance with assignments and homework.
  • Assist teachers requesting aid services (in the classroom) for students who are deaf.
  • Use state cars to transport students to/from classes or after-school activities and supervise inside the vehicle and to activities.
