Job summary

The College of St. Scholastica seeks a Supplemental Instruction Leader to model excellence, facilitate SI sessions, and guide students to higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy within BIO-related courses.

The role requires current CSS enrollment, federal work-study eligibility, and mastery of BIO2510/2520 or BIO1125, with strong communication and organizational abilities. Training and regular collaboration with faculty are provided.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current CSS student and eligible for Federal Work-Study.
  • Must have mastery of BIO2510/BIO2520 or BIO1125 biology courses.
  • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Professional poise to represent the College.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfort with public speaking and presenting.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate sessions 1–2 times per week to guide students through course content.
  • Attend lectures for the assigned course.
  • Support faculty messaging and help students discuss concepts.
  • Create materials and learning activities to reinforce content.
  • Provide general academic success strategies and act as a role model.
  • Communicate clearly with the class verbally and via email.
  • Attend initial training and ongoing team meetings.
  • Meet regularly with faculty and program coordinator to debrief and plan.

Job Purpose/Description
  • The Supplemental Instruction Leader will serve as a role model student, facilitate Supplementary Instruction sessions and discussions, and push students to higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Job Duties
  • Facilitate sessions (1-2 times/week) to guide students through the course content for the assigned course.
  • Attend lectures for the assigned course
  • Support faculty’s messaging and content to help students use the language of the discipline and discuss concepts in a supportive environment.
  • Create materials and design learning activities to reinforce course content.
  • Provide general academic success strategies and serve as a role model student.
  • Communicate clearly with the class verbally and through email.
  • Attend all initial training (roughly 4 hours) and ongoing team meetings (roughly 8 hrs).
  • Meet regularly with faculty and the program coordinator to debrief, set goals, and plan sessions.
  • Complete necessary paperwork (attendance sheets, timesheet, sign-in sheets, and evaluations).
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Other duties may be assigned and/or necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a current CSS student.
  • Federal work study eligibility is required
  • Must have mastery of a specific course (BIO2510/BIO2520 or BIO1125).
  • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Professional poise to represent the College.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfort with public speaking and presenting.
  • Strong service orientation and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Job functions require sitting, standing, and walking during shifts.
  • Ability to perform all of the above functions during an assigned workday without significant risk of injury.

  • Junior or senior status.
  • Students with leadership experience.
  • Experience providing academic support.
  • Experience facilitating group activities
Special Instructions to Applicants
  • SI Leader appointments are for one full academic year, excluding summer sessions.
  • Each course listed above will have two SI leaders who collaborate to prepare and facilitate sessions.
