Bay College - Main Campus is seeking a part-time SI Leader for Intro to Tech Math at the Iron Mountain campus. The role supports MATH 102 with structured study sessions, office hours, and collaboration with faculty. Training precedes the semester and expectations include attendance, planning, and student mentorship.

Ideal candidates will have strong math skills, tutoring experience, and excellent communication. The position offers a flexible schedule aligned with class times and SI sessions.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least an A- in MATH 102-Intro to Tech Math or equivalent courses.
  • Completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework.
  • Strong foundation in math.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tutoring experience.

Responsibilities

  • Attend training prior to the start of the semester.
  • Attend all scheduled class sessions.
  • Plan for each SI session held.
  • Hold two one-hour SI sessions each week.
  • Hold three office hours throughout the week to enhance SI session planning and provide services to students.
  • Meet with the course instructor weekly to ensure accuracy in SI session material.
  • Meet with the SI Manager weekly during the semester to assess SI session effectiveness.
  • Take notes and complete all assignments and readings for the course.
  • Advertise SI to students.
  • Take attendance at each SI session and report weekly attendance to the instructor and semester attendance to the SI Manager.
  • Utilize session planning forms to prepare organized, effective SI sessions.
  • Create a comfortable and supportive learning environment during the SI sessions.
  • Teach study skills and use collaborative learning techniques to help students master course material.
  • Administer and record data for SI evaluation surveys.
  • Mentor and advise students on ancillary topics and refer them to support services.
  • Attend regular training sessions provided by college staff.
  • Provide services to students utilizing the Student Success Center during office hours.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Job Summary/Basic Function The primary responsibility of this temporary position is to providesupplemental instruction to students in Bay College’s weldingprogram at Iron Mountain Campus. Specifically, the SI leader willsupport students in MATH 102-Intro to Technical Math.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognizedacademic support program that targets traditionally difficultcourses. Students come together in regularly scheduled studysessions to compare notes, discuss course materials, developcreative study tools, practice problem solving and prepare forexams. These sessions are facilitated by trained SI Leaders thatattend the course with students and prepare study materials for useduring SI sessions.

Work Schedule The SI leader must be available to attend lecture and hold SIsessions at the following times:SI class - Tuesdays and Thursdaysfrom 12:30-1:20 PM; Lecture: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-3:20PM; Office Hours: 3 office hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competence (at least an A-) in MATH 102-Intro toTech Math or comparable courses.
  • Completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework.
  • Strong foundation in math.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tutoring experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Supplemental Instruction.
  • Teaching experience.
