Job summary

Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ, seeks a Shuttle Supervisor to oversee field operations and daily bus services between the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. You will supervise drivers, coordinate routes and schedules, monitor GPS, ensure safety procedures, and resolve service issues to maintain reliable campus transportation.

This civil service role requires a valid NJ CDL with passenger endorsement and a Bachelor's degree with at least three years of supervisory transportation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience overseeing bus, shuttle service or transportation operations.
  • Driving privileges with good standing in the state of New Jersey with Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with passenger endorsement.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
  • Successful candidates must be flexible and available to be assigned to any shift, overtime, and holidays with adequate notice.

  • Monitor personnel to coordinate optimum utilization of service and schedules. Dispatch drivers to routes, demand-response, and special events.

Summary

Reporting to the Director of Transportation Services, the ShuttleSupervisor is responsible for field supervision of transportationoperations and the daily execution of bus service between theMontclair and Bloomfield campuses. The Shuttle Supervisor isadditionally responsible for direct oversight and evaluation oftransportation drivers. The Supervisor also monitors personnel andequipment to assist in the coordination of service and schedules,ensures compliance with safety procedures and confers withcustomers or supervising personnel to address questions, problems,or requests for service or equipment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise transportation work operations, plan work assignmentsand bus allocations to meet operational goals of thedepartment.
  • Monitor personnel to coordinate optimum utilization of serviceand schedules. Dispatch drivers to appropriate routes,demand-response, and special events.
  • Supervises bus drivers in the field and monitors GPS systems sothat passengers are transported according to schedule.
  • Maintain communications with drivers throughout shift; managingtelephone or radio reports regarding delays, equipment breakdowns,accidents, and other operating difficulties. Take necessary stepsto resolve difficulties, coordinate replacement equipment or staffto restore service. Prepare appropriate paperwork whennecessary.
  • Assist and implement safety procedures in compliance withlocal, state and federal rules/regulations including Department ofTransportation (DOT).
  • Make temporary adjustments to schedules and routes as requiredto meet passenger demand.
  • Ensure that drivers perform pre- and post-trip inspections andbring vehicles into garage for regular scheduled maintenance.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret applicable federal and/or statelaws and regulations affecting the unit.
  • Ensure that drivers adhere to University Human Resources, DOT,FTA, and departmental requirements.
  • Supervise and evaluate subordinate employee performance throughthe review of assigned work as well as through university-widePerformance Assessment Review.
  • Establish and maintain liaison and cooperative workingrelationships with college administrators, faculty, staff,students, student organizations, government and private agencies,and/or the public to accomplish the objectives of the unit.
  • Ensure that any accidents or other incidents are properlyreported, notifying appropriate units such as UniversityPolice.
  • Participate in the formation of policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safetyprograms.
  • Coordinate and/or assist with orientation of new drivers.
  • Assist in preparation of bi-weekly payroll in Workday.
  • Participate in Drug and Alcohol testing as required by theUniversity and applicable federal and/or state laws.
  • Coordinate bus repairs with Fleet Services to ensure equipmentis maintained and ready for service.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decreaseturnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperativelyto provide quality customer service.
  • Drive buses to cover demand when necessary and asdirected.
  • Supervise subordinates in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at anytime.
Qualifications

Preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships withoffices or organizations that impact on or relate to work ofShuttle Services.

*NOTE: This is a Civil Service position. As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are required to successfully serve a 4-Month Working Test Period.

This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations. This position requires on campus work and is not a position that allows remote work.

Salary Range

SALARY RANGE: R24: $76,286.63 - $111,856.03 NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New JerseyCivil Service Commission’s formula. Salaries for externalcandidates are determined up to step four, $86,957.45.

$76,286.63-$86,957.45 Annually
