Job summary

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director of Transportation Services, the Shuttle Supervisor is responsible for field supervision of transportation operations and the daily execution of bus service between the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. The Shuttle Supervisor is additionally responsible for direct oversight and evaluation of transportation drivers. The Supervisor also monitors personnel and equipment to assist in the coordination of service and schedules, ensures compliance with safety procedures and confers with customers or supervising personnel to address questions, problems, or requests for service or equipment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise transportation work operations, plan work assignments and bus allocations to meet operational goals of the department.
  • Monitor personnel to coordinate optimum utilization of service and schedules.
  • Dispatch drivers to appropriate routes, demand-response, and special events.
  • Supervises bus drivers in the field and monitors GPS systems so that passengers are transported according to schedule.
  • Maintain communications with drivers throughout shift; managing telephone or radio reports regarding delays, equipment breakdowns, accidents, and other operating difficulties.
  • Take necessary steps to resolve difficulties, coordinate replacement equipment or staff to restore service.
  • Prepare appropriate paperwork when necessary.
  • Assist and implement safety procedures in compliance with local, state and federal rules/regulations including Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Make temporary adjustments to schedules and routes as required to meet passenger demand.
  • Ensure that drivers perform pre- and post-trip inspections and bring vehicles into garage for regular scheduled maintenance.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations affecting the unit.
  • Ensure that drivers adhere to University Human Resources, DOT, FTA, and departmental requirements.
  • Supervise and evaluate subordinate employee performance through the review of assigned work as well as through university-wide Performance Assessment Review.
  • Establish and maintain liaison and cooperative working relationships with college administrators, faculty, staff, students, student organizations, government and private agencies, and/or the public to accomplish the objectives of the unit.
  • Ensure that any accidents or other incidents are properly reported, notifying appropriate units such as University Police.
  • Participate in the formation of policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programs.
  • Coordinate and/or assist with orientation of new drivers.
  • Assist in preparation of bi-weekly payroll in Workday.
  • Participate in Drug and Alcohol testing as required by the University and applicable federal and/or state laws.
  • Coordinate bus repairs with Fleet Services to ensure equipment is maintained and ready for service.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service.
  • Drive buses to cover demand when necessary and as directed.
  • Supervise subordinates in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Driving privileges with good standing in the state of New Jersey with Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with passenger endorsement.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
  • Successful candidates must be flexible and available to be assigned to any shift, overtime, and holidays with adequate notice.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with offices or organizations that impact on or relate to work of Shuttle Services.

*NOTE: This is a Civil Service position. As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are required to successfully serve a 4-Month Working Test Period. This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations. This position requires on campus work and is not a position that allows remote work.

Salary Range

R24: $76,286.63 - $111,856.03

*NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission’s formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to step four, $86,957.45.
