Job summary

Ottenweller Company, Inc. in Fort Wayne seeks a grinding operator to select tooling, run handheld grinders, and inspect parts per blueprints. You will ensure finish quality by deslagging and polishing surfaces and perform routine machine setup and maintenance.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, basic math skills, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Prior manufacturing experience is preferred; this is a full-time position with equal opportunity employment.

Responsibilities

• Select grinder type and abrasive belt grade per specifications.
• Operate handheld grinder to remove scratches, burrs, and weld material.
• Deslag and polish surfaces to a smooth finish.
• Set up and run grinding machines; load parts and monitor controls.
• Perform first-piece and in-process inspection per blueprint.
• Maintain grinding equipment; replace worn disks and belts; log maintenance.
• Other duties as assigned.

Job description

• Selects type of hand-held grinding equipment to be used and selects grade of abrasive belt, wheel, or disk according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and condition of metal and attaches to grinder.
• Operates hand-held grinder and moves it over surface of workpiece to remove scratches, laminated metal, excess weld material, and burrs.
• Deslags parts and polishes ground areas with finer abrasive to produce smooth, unmarred surface.
• Sets up and operates grinding machines by setting controls, placing parts into machine, starting machine, and running parts.
• Performs first-piece and in-process inspection by checking dimensions of part per blueprint using tape measure or appropriate alternate. Inspects parts according to C=0 chart. Completes inspection form.
• Performs preventative maintenance on grinding equipment, including but not limited to replacing worn abrasive disks, wheels, and belts, greasing and cleaning machines, and checking water and coolant levels. Completes maintenance log.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required; previous manufacturing experience and/or training preferred.

Language Skills

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one.

Mathematical Skills

• Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
