Job summary

Jobtailor in Salina, KS is seeking an experienced shop technician to perform mechanical repairs, maintenance, and diagnostic work for trucks and commercial vehicles.

The role requires DOT compliance, air brake certification, and the ability to conduct on-call service while maintaining high safety and quality standards. ASE certifications are preferred, and candidates may advance toward senior technical roles mentoring others.

Qualifications

  • Air Brake Certification required.
  • DOT Medical Card required.
  • ASE certifications preferred.
  • Shop Technician IV requires certification progression (T2–T7) within one year of promotion.
  • Section 609 HVAC certification required for HVAC service.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Ability to attend HVAC, Electrical, and DOT training.
  • Ability to obtain required ASE, DOT, and other certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical repairs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services, tire services, and emergency road service calls.
  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Perform service calls, including night and on-call assignments as required.
  • Use J-Pro, FleetCross, and OE software to diagnose and repair vehicle systems.
  • Complete work orders accurately, documenting labor, parts, and warranty information.
  • Perform intermediate to advanced engine repairs and diagnostics.
  • Diagnose and repair emissions systems, including DPF, EGR, sensors, and regeneration procedures.
  • Perform drivetrain repairs, including clutches, differentials, PTOs, axle assemblies, transmissions, and driveline components.
  • Perform wheel-end, air system, air brake, steering, suspension, electrical, and HVAC diagnostics and repairs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, tools, and equipment.
  • Ensure tools, jacks, and service vehicles are maintained in safe working condition.
  • Complete LMS training requirements and OSHA Skills Demonstrations.
  • Provide friendly, professional, and competent customer service.
  • Follow company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Advanced-level technicians may serve as technical mentors and subject matter experts for shop personnel

Requirements
  • Air Brake Certification required
  • DOT Medical Card required
  • ASE certifications preferred
  • Shop Technician IV must obtain or maintain T2: Diesel Engines, T4: Brakes, T5: Suspension & Steering, T6: Electrical/Electronic Systems, and T7: Heating, Ventilation & A/C, or equivalent, within one year of promotion
  • Section 609 HVAC certification required for HVAC service
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete HVAC, Electrical, and DOT training
  • Ability to obtain required ASE, DOT, and other certifications
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, nights, and on-call schedules as needed
  • Reliable transportation and phone
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (as applicable)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with team members and deliver excellent customer service
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday
  • Ability to work in shop and roadside environments under varying conditions
  • Physical attendance at the primary work location is required
