Job summary

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is seeking a Shop Foreman for Building Services Equipment. This role supervises the building services equipment shop, leads technician crews, and ensures maintenance of district vehicles. The position is full-time, 12 months, based at the district premises.

Starting date is immediate. The role reports to the Supervisor, Equipment Maintenance and requires adherence to safety standards and district policies. Local travel to job sites may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree in automotive technologies ASE master technician certification preferred.
• Minimum of three years in automotive diagnostics, maintenance, and/or repair.

General Definition of Work
The building services equipment shop foreman, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with limited decision-making discretion related to the supervision of the building services equipment shop and functions as the shop manager. Position participates in mechanical maintenance and repair activities, organizes site work activities and scheduling, and implements fiscally responsible policies. Employee performs district-level work to carry-out the Board of Education policies under the direction of the Supervisor, Equipment Maintenance.

Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
• Oversee and lead assigned programs/staff in the district
• Provide supervision to equipment mechanic crews
• Perform skilled work involved in the maintenance of district vehicles
• Serve as acting supervisor in the absence of the equipment maintenance supervisor
• Monitor work completion to ensure work is completed appropriately and in a timely manner
• Inspect for quality assurance
• Recommend and make changes when necessary for improvement
• Monitor NC safety emission standards and vehicle compliancePrepare reports necessary for the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
• Maintain shop documentation including manuals and publications needed such as State Preventive Maintenance Manual, OSHA, EPA, ADA publications and regulations, Materials Safety Data Sheets, Hazardous Materials list, and other local procedures
• Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
• Facilitate staff meetings and attend other related meetings as needed/required
• Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
• Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
• Safely operate a district fleet vehicle to travel to assigned job sites, ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and company driving policies
• Maintain the vehicle in clean, orderly, and serviceable condition, promptly reporting any maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns
• Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies and vehicle maintenance
• Through knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to school system vehicle maintenance
• Knowledge of safety protocols and accident response
• Skilled in planning, prioritizing, assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of the assigned personnel
• Skilled in required mechanical principals and techniques
• Ability to perform technical inspections, major repairs, and maintenance
• Ability to use special analysis and testing equipment, troubleshoot, assist and train staff
• Ability to coordinate and schedule major repairs with the equipment supervisor
• Ability to assist in establishing and maintaining all documentation required at the site including records of all inspections, repairs, maintenance work performed, and parts/supplies used
• Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
• Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
• Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Associate degree in automotive technologies (ASE master technician certification) preferred
• Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in automotive diagnostics, maintenance, and/or repair required
• Equivalent combination of education and experience
